Powered 100 percent by electricity, the Nissan LEAF is a game-changer in modern motoring. You get to enjoy the convenience of zero trips to the pumps while still driving a practical, comfortable and advanced car.
New technologies need new styling, which is exactly what you get with the Nissan LEAF. It is bold, yet charming to look at, with its curved edges and oversized, raised headlights. Its tail is equally as distinctive, with its sculpted shape and elongated vertical lamps. The windscreen is made from UV-reducing glass to help protect your skin and eyes when the sun is shining. In the Tekna trim level, the LEAF also comes with rear privacy glass to shield passengers and any belongings from view. This trim also comes with LED headlights for sharper vision at night.
Standing at four metres in length, it is a similar size to other popular hatchbacks, making it convenient for families and professionals. The charging port is nestled on the bonnet and has a handy light so you can easily park up on your drive at night and plug the car in to charge up.
The LEAF has five seats, making it a traditional family car. In the boot, there’s 370 litres of space to hold a day’s shopping plus a couple of holdalls, or a cool box, a pushchair and bags for a day out with the family. There’s also the option of a cargo organiser so you can keep any valuables securely concealed under the floor of the boot.
To make it ultra-green, there’s the option of a fabric partly created out of recycled bottles. In the Tekna, the seats are heated to quickly warm you up on chilly winter mornings.
A rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack powers the LEAF in a choice of a 24kWh and 30kWh power outputs. With no need to change gear or increase your revs, the LEAF has instant torque which delivers quick acceleration. The battery pack is positioned close to the ground in the middle of the car, giving it a low centre of gravity for a responsive drive. It’s quiet, too, and emits absolutely no CO2 making it incredibly friendly to the environment.
There are three ways to charge the LEAF. A rapid 30-minute charge port allows you to quickly top up with up to 80 percent of power en route. The home-charging unit delivers a full charge in around seven hours for the 24kWh and nine-and-a-half hours for the 30kWh, so you can charge up overnight. You can also use your mains electricity supply to charge the car, which takes between 12 and 15 hours.
ESP and ABS come as standard to help you maintain a steady and controlled drive, free from slippage. Hill start assist is also included to prevent you from rolling back into other cars when taking off in traffic on a hill. Because it has a quiet engine, the LEAF comes with a warning sound to let pedestrians know you are approaching. The Tekna trim comes with a 360˚-view monitor, so you have another pair of eyes to let you know if a hazard is close by.
Advanced entertainment is included as standard so you can listen to your playlist through the CD player, AUX-in or USB port, or simply tune in to the radio. Bluetooth connectivity allows you to use your phone while driving, safely. Steering wheel controls ensure you don’t have to take your hands from the wheel to change the stereo and can concentrate on the road ahead. If you upgrade to the Acenta, you can also enjoy the relaxing drive that cruise control brings, along with the comfort of eco-friendly air conditioning.
