Postponed buying that electric car? Here we talk you through all the reasons why it’s good to go green.

It may surprise you to know that the first electric car is believed to have been created in 1884 by a Victorian inventor!

While the electric vehicles have been around for more than 100 years it wasn’t until the 21st century that they became much more popular and whether it is a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or an all-electric car their popularity looks set to increase as prices drop and sales in the vehicles increase as consumers search for ways to save money.

Pros

Money - The cost per mile to fuel an electric vehicle is approximately one-third to one-quarter the cost of gasoline (on a cost per mile basis). The UK Government are also strong supporters of ‘going green’ offering a grant to those who purchase one. Low Maintenance – The electric car runs on electricity.Studies have shown that on average you will save 35% over time due to not needing oil changing or maintenance costs for exhaust systems. The cars also don’t need to be serviced as regularly.

Convenient – You’ll never have to queue at the petrol station again! Pull into your drive way, reach over for your plug, and charge up your car. The process can take anywhere between 30 minutes to 12 hours depending on the battery size. For example, the Nissan Leaf 30KWh takes 4 hours from empty – we recommend you come along to one of our Nissan garages for a test drive!

Quiet and quick – So with the money your saving and the convenience of running an electric car we suspect you assume you’ll be sacrificing elsewhere? What about the speed? No. Electric vehicles are quiet and quick. They are able to provide a smooth drive with higher acceleration over longer distances and can also reduce noise pollution as they are much quieter.

Cons

Lack of choice – There are roughly 30 plug-in electric vehicles currently on the market and you either love them or you hate them. The field is however, quickly expanding and several brands have created goals of releasing a dozen more models in the next coming years.

Short driving ranges – Electric cars are limited to how far they can go before they need recharging and therefore as of yet can’t be used for long journeys. On average most electric vehicles can go 50-100 miles before they need to be recharged.

Powered 100 percent by electricity, the Nissan LEAF is a game-changer in modern motoring. You get to enjoy the convenience of zero trips to the pumps while still driving a practical, comfortable and advanced car.

Exterior

New technologies need new styling, which is exactly what you get with the Nissan LEAF. It is bold, yet charming to look at, with its curved edges and oversized, raised headlights. Its tail is equally as distinctive, with its sculpted shape and elongated vertical lamps. The windscreen is made from UV-reducing glass to help protect your skin and eyes when the sun is shining. In the Tekna trim level, the LEAF also comes with rear privacy glass to shield passengers and any belongings from view. This trim also comes with LED headlights for sharper vision at night.

Standing at four metres in length, it is a similar size to other popular hatchbacks, making it convenient for families and professionals. The charging port is nestled on the bonnet and has a handy light so you can easily park up on your drive at night and plug the car in to charge up.

Interior

The LEAF has five seats, making it a traditional family car. In the boot, there’s 370 litres of space to hold a day’s shopping plus a couple of holdalls, or a cool box, a pushchair and bags for a day out with the family. There’s also the option of a cargo organiser so you can keep any valuables securely concealed under the floor of the boot.

To make it ultra-green, there’s the option of a fabric partly created out of recycled bottles. In the Tekna, the seats are heated to quickly warm you up on chilly winter mornings.
